Puerto Rico - Mayaguez Inscriptions: (r) PORTO RICO, Columbus Monument, Mayaguez (v) Columbus Monument. The statue of Columbus rests on an orante base, and is a fine bronze figure of the discoverer of America, poised upon a globe, and upholding the flag of Spain. The monument is in the centre of a superb square in Mayaguez, and, according to tradition, on the spot where Columbus camped the second night after landing. A fine balustrade surrounds the plaza.
