Annotation

According to ancient oral tradition once the Sinsheim man mowed the reeds in the moat, on the Untertorwiese (Lower gate meadow) on or on swampy meadows outside the city walls (the present Karlsplatz), standing to their ankles in water. The scythes blunt and often had to be sharpened with a whetstone. Although the mower stood in the water, they spit on the whetstone instead of dipping it in the water, or using the water can hanging on his belt. This should have been observed by some foreigner, and since then the Sinsheim people have their nickname "Wetzstoispucker" (Whetstone Spitter).
