The memorial was described by Colton as "War being controlled by peace, war being represented by a war horse & peace being a winged female figure." Below the sculpture is a frieze of the Mounted Artillery and lower the motto: quo fas et ubique gloria ducunt (Where Right And Glory Lead). The pedestal stands in the center of a semicircular wall, with the text:erected by the officers and men of the royal artillery in memory of their honoured dead south africa 1899-1902. On pillars on the ends of the wall are bronze reliefs showing the Royal Artillery in action.
