Description

Statue of Columbus the explorer, looking out upon the vast oceans of the New World that he discovered. He holds a sheaf of papers in both hands, and is dressed in a 15th-century costume, with a knee-length garment belted at the waist, stockings, and a coat with a fur collar. At his feet a world globe rests atop a bronze base that is sculpted to show ocean waves cascading down onto the pink granite base below.

Annotation

The sculpture cost $20,000 and was a gift from the city's fourteen Italian societies. The date October 12, 1926 was not engraved into the base until 1973.
