Description

11 meter high monument in the form of an octagonal cone, surmounted by a Germania figure. Around the cone in three levels the names of battlefields (paris, metz, sedan, spicheren, koeniggrätz, düppel, belfort, and strassburg), the names of the fallen soldiers from Witten (some almost unreadanle), and one with four medaillons with portraits.
At the upper edge of the square foot is written: den gefallen helden die stadt witten (The town of Witten to the fallen heroes) and on its corners the years 1864 1866, 1870, and 1871.
In addition, four stone allegorical eagles adorned the base of the monument until the end of World War II.

The monument, a victory monument, commemorates the wars of German unification (German-Danish War of 1864, German War of 1866 and Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71). The names of all Witten soldiers who lost their lives in these wars were embedded in the memorial.
