Het kunstwerk herinnert aan de bevrijding van Son en Breugel door de Amerikaanse 101ste Airborne Divisie. De Parachutist werd op 17 september 1964 aangeboden door de inwoners van Son en Breugel ter gelegenheid van het 20ste bevrijdingsjaar.

SON EN BREUGEL liberated on the 17th of september, 1944, by the 506th parachute infantry and elements of the 326th airborne engineers. this town was the command post of the 101st airborne division during the first three days of the holland campaign, the 506th, together with units from the 327th glider infantry, 377th parachute field artillery, and the 81st airborne aa battalion, succesfully repulsed all attacks on this position from d-day to d plus 3, thereby anabling division headquarters to establish the command function so necessary to the success of the overall mission. commanding general: major general maywell d. taylor this memorial plaque is placed here in honor of those "screaming eagles" who gave their lives in this campaign, and as a token of esteem and friendship for the people of the netherlands placed by comrades of the 101st airborne division association 1944-1969 participating units in the holland campaign
