Social sofa uitgevoerd in Popart. met een gezicht waarvoor een grote tekstballon waar geen tekst in staat, maar in felle kleuren is uitgevoerd. Onderaan staat de tekst "It's time to lounge & Socialize". Op de hoge zijkant is het hoofd van een vrouw met grote oorringen afgebeeld. De achterzijde is niet te zien door de begroeiing.
De makers over hun bank: "het was de bedoeling om het straatbeeld een beetje op te vrolijken met wat kleur. Er zijn al grijze regenachtige dagen genoeg in België! Alle kleur is welkom. Als je over felle kleuren spreekt dan kom je al snel uit bij popart, een moderne kunststroom uit de jaren '60. Enkele belangrijke kenmerken zijn de cartooneske afbeeldingen van vrouwen met felle, primaire kleuren omlijnd door vette zwarte lijnen. Op de voorkant van de bank zijn je een vrouwengezicht met een hand die een tekstballon fluistert. De felle kleuren in de tekstballon stellen de fleurige verhalen voor die tijdens het burten talrijk zullen verteld worden. De term 'it's time to lounge en socialize' spreekt voor zich. Deze bank moet een soort van verzamelplaats worden voor buurtbewoners van de Kalmthoutsesteenweg. Met andere woorden: tijd voor ontspanning en een goede babbel! De rode stippen die zich op de bank bevinden zijn een kenmerk van de kunstenaar Roy Lichtenstein."

The creators on their bench: "The idea was to brighten up the streetscape a bit with some colour. There are already enough grey, rainy days in Belgium! Any colour is welcome. When you talk about bright colours, you soon end up with Pop Art, a modern art movement from the 1960s. Some key features are the cartoonish depictions of women in bright, primary colours outlined by bold black lines. On the front of the bench is a woman's face with a hand whispering into a speech bubble. The bright colours in the speech bubble represent the colourful stories that will be told in abundance whilst sitting on the bench. The phrase 'it’s time to lounge and socialise' speaks for itself. This bench is intended to become a kind of meeting place for local residents of Kalmthoutsesteenweg. In other words: time for relaxation and a good chat! The red dots on the bench are a signature feature of the artist Roy Lichtenstein.

Social Sofa’s zijn betonnen huiskamermodel zitbanken, bedekt met kleurige mozaïek. Het zijn 'Social' Sofa’s omdat ze de wijk en de mensen die er wonen met elkaar verbinden. Men kan elkaar bijvoorbeeld op zo’n bank ontmoeten om verhalen uit te wisselen. De betonnen banken worden door het bedrijf Social Sofa geleverd en de mozaïeken worden gemaakt door mensen uit de buurt, schoolkinderen, mensen met een afstand tot de arbeidsmarkt, en re-integreerders, en soms ook door kunstenaars.
Het idee is van designer, kunstenares, activiste en cabaretière Karin Bruers uit Tilburg. Haar bedrijf Social Sofa vervaardigt de betonnen banken. Alleen al in Tilburg staan er 150. In het hele land staan er zeker zo'n 1500.
Op onze website nemen we alleen de 'huiskamermodel zitbanken' op, die met mozaïeksteentjes bedekt zijn. Er bestaan nl. enkele die met graffiti van een voorstelling voorzien zijn.
Social Sofas are concrete sofas designed to resemble living room furniture, covered in colourful mosaics. They are called ‘Social’ Sofas because they bring the neighbourhood and the people who live there closer together. People can, for example, meet on one of these benches to share stories. The concrete benches are supplied by the company Social Sofa, and the mosaics are created by local residents, schoolchildren, people facing barriers to employment, those reintegrating into the workforce, and sometimes also by artists.
The idea comes from designer, artist, activist and cabaret artist Karin Bruers from Tilburg. Her company, Social Sofa, manufactures the concrete benches. There are 150 in Tilburg alone. Across the Netherlands, there are certainly around 1,500. Outside the Netherlands only a few dozen.
On our website, we only feature the ‘living room model benches’, which are covered in mosaic tiles. There are, in fact, a few that are decorated with graffiti.
