By the end of the 19th century, there were no homes in Mons where elderly couples could live together. Going to the elderly home was synonymous with a divorce from the spouses. The Commission of the Civic Houses for the Elderly, who accounted for this problem, decided to address this gap in 1897. Thanks to Henri Glépin, who left the city a nice sum, a new building was built on the corner of Place Nervienne and the Rue Achille Legrand for thirty elderly families.
