Beschrijving / Description

Cortenstalen plaat met daarin uitgenesneden het silhouet van Marie-Thérèse De Decker. Op een betonnen zeshoek is dit silhouet in glimmend staal aangebracht. Een stalen paneel met informatie maakt deel uit van het kunstwerk.

Het is op 9(?) maart 2024 onthuld door VRT-weervrouw Jacotte Brokken en voorzitter Lieven Dehandschutter van Erfgoedcel Waasland.

It was unveiled on 9(?) March 2024 by VRT weatherwoman Jacotte Brokken and chairman Lieven Dehandschutter of Erfgoedcel Waasland.

Straffe vrouwen van het Waasland

• Sint-Niklaas, Huis Janssens: Thérèse (1805-1871).
• Waasmunster, Kasteel Blauwendael: Clara-Maria Cocquyt (1895-?).
• Lokeren, Villa Ter Beuken: Anna Cogen (1891-1962).

Stout women of the Waasland

Erfgoedcel Waasland, together with Tourism Waasland, launched in 2024 the experience trail ‘Straffe vrouwen’ along artworks about five enterprising historical women from the Land of Waas. These are women who had a strong connection with the location:

• Beveren, Cortewalle Castle: Isabella Maria Goubau (1707-1742)
• Beveren, Hof Ter Welle: Anna Francisca Piers (1664-1751).
• Sint-Niklaas, Janssens House: Thérèse (1805-1871).
• Waasmunster, Blauwendael Castle: Clara-Maria Cocquyt (1895-?).
• Lokeren, Villa Ter Beuken: Anna Cogen (1891-1962).

Geschiedenisboeken vertellen honderduit over de uitzonderlijke verwezenlijkingen van mannen. Maar ook vrouwen drukten vroeger hun stempel op onze regio, net zoals vandaag. Hoog tijd dus om hen in de kijker te zetten. Wandel langs verschillende Wase erfgoedsites en maak kennis met vijf straffe vrouwen, van jonkvrouw tot dienstmeid. Marie-Thérèse De Decker 1805-1871 Ken je Marie-Thérèse De Decker? Ze was de vrouw achter één van de belangrijkste textielbedrijven in het Waasland: firma Janssens - De Decker. Met haar familiekapitaal kochten zij en haar man als eersten in Sint-Niklaas een stoommachine waardoor ze heel wat aanzien kregen. Ze maakten er fantasieweefsels, zoals gebloemde of tartan sjaals mee. Maar de impact van Marie-Thérèse reikt een heel stuk verder. Ze ontfermad zich ook over het welzijn van haar personeel en onderwees arbeiders en kinderen uit de fabriek. Het ondernemen en de zorg voor anderen zijn waarden die ze met veel overtuiging doorgaf aan haar kinderen, waaronder zoon Alfons Janssens. Hij woonde hier in Huis Janssens, op een steenworp van de vroegere fabriessite, vandaag het Vakschoolhof.

History books tell hundreds of stories about the extraordinary achievements of men. But women too used to leave their mark on our region, just as they do today. High time, therefore, to put them in the spotlight. Walk along several Waasland heritage sites and meet five stout women, from noblewoman to maid. Marie-Thérèse De Decker 1805-1871 Do you know Marie-Thérèse De Decker? She was the woman behind one of the most important textile companies in the Waasland region: firm Janssens - De Decker. With her family capital, she and her husband were the first in Sint-Niklaas to buy a steam engine which gave them considerable prestige. They made fantasy fabrics, such as floral or tartan scarves. But Marie-Thérèse's impact goes much further. She also took care of the welfare of her staff and taught workers and children from the factory. Entrepreneurship and caring for others are values she passed on with great conviction to her children, including son Alfons Janssens. He lived here in House Janssens, a stone's throw from the former factory site, today the Vakschoolhof.
