Het gedenkteken voor de gesneuvelden uit de Eerste Wereldoorlog bestaat uit een stenen muur met in gouden letters "AAN ONZE HELDEN" en de jaartallen 1914-1918 en 1940-1945 (de Tweede Wereldoorlog is later toegevoegd). Op de achterzijde staat een afbeelding van het brandende stadhuis van Dendermonde (slecht te zien), het wapen van de stad met daaromheen de tekst:
Voor deze muur staat een beeldengroep van een moeder met zoontje en dochtertje die een bloemenkrans overhandigt aan een fiere soldaat, die zijn hand laat rusten op het hoofd van een uitgemergende 'opgeëiste' (in België de term voor de dwangarbeiders die tijdens de Eerste Wereldoorlog o.a. loopgraven en wegen aan moesten leggen).
The memorial to the fallen from World War I consists of a stone wall with "TO OUR HELDEN" (to our heroes) in gold letters and the dates 1914-1918 and 1940-1945 (World War II was added later). On the reverse is an image of the burning town hall of Dendermonde (poorly visible), the coat of arms of the city surrounded by the text: "The town of Dendermonde to her heroes, 1914-1918 - 1940-1945. Inaugurated in the year 1924 on the 27th July; Added on the 8th of May 1949."

In front of this wall is a sculpture group of a mother with infant son and daughter handing a wreath of flowers to a proud soldier, who rests his hand on the head of an emaciated ‘claimed persons’ (in Belgium the term for the forced labourers who had to build trenches and roads during World War I, among other things).
