Dit kunstwerk symboliseert de stad Oudenaarde, die als een waternimf ontwaakt uit de Schelde.
De kunstenaar had zijn werk La Reine de l’Escaut se lève genoemd, maar na protest ging hij accoord met een gedeeltelijke vertaling in het Vlaams. Ondanks dat staat het beeld bekend onder zijn spotnaam 'De penis van Oudenaarde.

This work of art symbolises the town of Oudenaarde, awakening from the Scheldt like a water nymph.
The artist had called his work La Reine de l'Escaut se lève, but after protests, he agreed to a partial translation into Flemish. Despite this, the sculpture is known by its mocking name ‘The penis of Oudenaarde.
