Description

The Church of St. Francis has a large relief in soap-stone at the front façade. In the roundel at the top is a depiction of St. Francis receving the stigmata, in the background the church is visible. The lower relief shows the Virgin Mary.

Artist

Antonio Francisco Lisboa "O Aleijandinho" (Vila Rica [now Ouro Preto] 1738 - Vila Rica 1814), Colonial Brazil-born sculptor and architect, noted for his works on and in various churches of Brazil. The nickname Aleijadinho means 'little cripple' (Wikipedia).
