Description

Statue of Josef Kohout on a high wheeler (without it small rear wheel). In the wheel is the text champion bicycle j. kohout smichov.

Jan Kohout (1819-1884) was a factory worker from Smíchov near Prague who in the winter of 1879/1880 made high wheels for his sons Josef and František. It was the first act in the Austro-Hungarian monarchy that initiated the development of cycling in Bohemia. Josef Kohout became the most important rider of that time. He was co-founder the Český klub velocipedistů (ČKV 1880), and the magazine Velocipedista (1880-1890).
The monument to father and son Kohout was unveiled op 19 November 2024. It was initiated by the Czech Velocipedist Club of 1880, headed by the chairman Dr. Jan Králík, it was financed by Mrs. Vratislava Čiperová from the bequest of her husband, Mr. Ing. Jan Schaffer, it was created by father and son Karel and Petr Holub.

(To mark the 160th anniversary of the birth of Josef Kohout (1863–1946) and the 30th anniversary of the re-establishment of the Czech Velocipedists’ Club 1880, the artists Karel and Petr Holub (2024) created this work using a donation from the enthusiastic amateur cyclist Ing. Jan Schaffer).
