Sandsteinstatue des Neptun, des römischen Meeresgottes, der einen Lendenschurz aus Schilf trägt und dessen Kopf mit Schilf gekrönt ist. In seiner rechten Hand hält er einen Dreizack. Er ist von Wasser spritzenden Delfinen umgeben, und sein Blick ist auf die Jesuitenkirche gerichtet, die zu jener Zeit gerade erst erbaut worden war und heute als St.-Martin-Kirche bekannt ist.
Er steht auf der Brunnenstütze in einem rechteckigen, versetzten Sandsteinbecken, das mit einem schmiedeeisernen Gitter versehen ist. Auf der Vorderseite der Stütze ist das Wappen des Fürstbischofs Lothar Franz von Schönborn zu sehen, während auf der Rückseite das Wappen der Stadt Bamberg abgebildet ist.
Der Brunnen wird über eine etwa 1,5 km lange Wasserleitung versorgt, für deren Bau der Stadtarchitekt Johann Christoph Bissing verantwortlich war.
Im Bamberger Volksmund nennt man die Neptunfigur wegen des Dreizacks 'Gobelmo', fränkisch für 'Gabelmann'.
Sandstone statue of Neptune, the Roman god of the sea, wearing a reed loincloth and with his head crowned with reeds. In his right hand he holds a trident. He is surrounded by water-spouting dolphins and his gaze is directed towards the Jesuit Church, which had recently been built at the time and is now known as St Martin’s.
He stands on the fountain pillar within a rectangular, offset sandstone basin fitted with a wrought-iron grille. The front of the pillar bears the coat of arms of Prince-Bishop Lothar Franz von Schönborn, whilst the rear bears the coat of arms of the city of Bamberg.
The fountain is supplied via a water pipe approximately 1.5 km long, for which the town architect, Johann Christoph Bissing, was responsible.
Because of its trident the statue of Neptune is in Bamberg vernacular known as 'Gobelmo' (the Franconian word for ‘Gabelmann’, Fork man).
