Die Heiligenfiguren im Wetzlarer Dom befinden sich am frühgotischen Portal, am Westportal sowie am Süd- oder Turmportal mit Altan.
The statues of saints at Wetzlar Cathedral are located at the the early Gothic Portal (c. 1260, all statues replaced 1903-1910), in the West Portal, and the South or Tower Portal with balcony.
This earliest of the cathedral’s three portals was probably constructed by builders from Paderborn. An impressively simple ensemble of figures prepares those entering for the Christian narrative of salvation: at the top of the pointed gable, Christ is enthroned as the Judge of the World. Standing at his side are Cain (depicted as a farmer with a basket of fruit) and Abel (depicted as a shepherd with a lamb). In the round arch beneath God, Mary stands on a corbel as the patron saint of the church. Two female saints, Mary Magdalene and Catherine face the entrance door, whilst two male saints James the Great and the Apostle Peter turn towards those arriving. The canopies above these last four figures are adorned with the symbols of the four Evangelists.
All the figures were replaced between 1903 and 1910. The original paintings of Mary Magdalene and Saint Catherine are in the church.

The West Portal, a Marian portal, was intended to be the main portal and dates from the late 14th century. Of the planned rich figurative decoration, only the Madonna on the central pillar and the two sculpted friezes in the arch above were actually completed. The lower frieze depicts the Adoration of the Magi, whilst the upper frieze depicts the Last Judgement, in which Mary is portrayed as an intercessor. |

The tower portal with balcony dates from 1380 to around 1400. The master builder’s name is known: Tyle von Frankenberg.
The planned elaborate figurative decoration of this portal remained incomplete. Only the statues of the Apostles Paul, Andrew, Peter, and John, as well as the statue of Mary on the central pillar, were actually completed (the statue of James the Great was probably added later, since it is not mentioned in the 'Rundgang'). The archway above the portal features a depiction of the Last Judgement, and above the balcony there is a depiction of Christ as the Man of Sorrows.
