Kreuzabnahme mit UmstehendenDescent from the Cross with Bystanders |
Helmut Moos
1983 |

Sculpture group, consisting of three elements,
shoing the the Descent from the Cross as a street sceneTwo men remove the lifeless body from the cross with professional bustle. The 'Lady with dogs' - an earlier sculpture in which the loneliness of a person, here probably a widow, is depicted - approaches from the left. Without looking at the events she has known since her youth, she endeavours to pass and the two people already standing in front of the cross as unchallenged as possible. These, an old man with a boy by the hand, have approached the scene axially and stopped in front of it. The old man stands frozen, legs apart, in front of the events he knows. He does not ask how and why, because he can no longer ask - as his back shows, he is hollow, numb. Only the boy connects inwardly, albeit helplessly, with what he sees; his outstretched hand reaches into the void. A female passer-by contorts her face into an unwilling expression. The two dogs that she clutches to her chest are closer to her than what is happening.
The group was made in 1982 for the Hildeboldkirche in Königsdorf (see object denw1169). The Braunschweig group is obviously a later cast and placed in 1983.
