Fountain depicting the brown coal tradition of the town of Frechen in in a series of scenes from the pre-industrial production of 'Klüütten' ('clods', pre-industrially hand-produced brown coal pellets from the Rhenish mining area) to the delivery of modern briquettes.
The bronze figures, arranged in several groups around the circular brick fountain, depict the extraction of the coal and the production of clods and briquettes. A series of scenes around the central column of natural stone shows the pre-industrial work involved: sorting, kneading, moulding, drying and stacking the pieces of coal called clods. The group of figures at the top shows the previously necessary process of making the brown coal mass pliable by tamping it with the feet. On the platforms of the outer ring, humorously decorated scenes show the transport of the modern briquettes from the manufacturer and dealer to the customers, who have to carry them laboriously to the basement and later up to the apartments.
