Description

Basalt statue of the archangel Michael (with a steel helmet), commemorating the residents of Höfen who were killed or missing in the Great War (World War I). It represents the archangel Michael, the parish patron of Höfen, and the patron of the soldiers. With a spear that has not been preserved, he kills the dragon at his feet. In 1938 the sculpture was erected as a part of a war monument and consecrated with ecclesiastical ceremonial. Already a few years later, local party officials of the NSDAP had the monument removed as 'degenerate art' and thrown in the forest. In 1978, the partly severely damaged parts were reassembled at today's location.
