Bronze sculpture of St. Martin sharing his cloak with a beggar. The statue is erected on the occasion of the 125th anniversary of the 'Martinszug' (St. Martin's procession) in Aldekerk.

Der heilige Martin und der Bettler

Als Martin noch Soldat in der römischen Armee war und in Gallien (dem heutigen Frankreich) stationiert war, hatte er eine Vision, die zur bekanntesten Geschichte seines Lebens wurde. Eines Tages, als er sich den Toren der Stadt Amiens näherte, begegnete er einem spärlich bekleideten Bettler. Impulsiv zerschnitt er seinen eigenen Militärmantel in zwei Hälften und teilte ihn mit dem Bettler. In dieser Nacht träumte Martin von Jesus, der die Mantelhälfte trug, die er verschenkt hatte. Er hörte, wie Jesus zu den Engeln sagte: „Hier ist Martin, der römische Soldat, der noch nicht getauft ist; er hat mich bekleidet.“ In einer anderen Erzählung war Martins Mantel wiederhergestellt, als er erwachte. Der Traum bestärkte Martin in seiner Frömmigkeit, und er ließ sich im Alter von 18 Jahren taufen.

Saint Martin and the Beggar
While Martin was still a soldier in the Roman army and deployed in Gaul (modern day France), he experienced the vision that became the most-repeated story about his life. One day as he was approaching the gates of the city of Amiens he met a scantily clad beggar. He impulsively cut his own military cloak in half and shared it with the beggar. That night, Martin dreamed of Jesus wearing the half-cloak he had given away. He heard Jesus say to the angels: "Here is Martin, the Roman soldier who is not baptized; he has clad me." In another story, when Martin woke, his cloak was restored. The dream confirmed Martin in his piety, and he was baptized at the age of 18.
