Anmerkung / Annotation
"Herr Augustin", or romanticized "lieber Augustin", a according to the legend a rich citizen of Gotha, who during the famine if 1433-1438 distributed bread among the poor. There was already a statue before 1662 of a man distributing bread, which probably symbolized a city father giving the necessary to the citizens. Since the both children are richly clothed, this seems to be true. Still in the 18th century, the statue was unnamed. Paul Welcker is the first who gave the statue the name Augustin in his poem "Der Kinderfreund am Jakobsplatze zu Gotha", probably den because the statue lookt like St. Augustin, who shared his possessions with the poor.
