NiobeFigure from Greek mythology. She is the daughter of Tantalus(Wikipedia) |
1834 |

Sculpture of a sitting Niobe on top the the Temple, the centrepiece of Temple Gardens and built in 1834. It is copied from the Choragic Monument of Thrasyllos. According to Pausanias existed in the cave behind the original monument a representation of Apollo and Artemis slaughtering the children of Niobe. Probably for that reason the statue of Niobe is on the roof of the Lincoln Temple. The statue does not agree with the known statues of Niobe, where she is depicted as a mourning woman after her fourteen children were killed.
