Unveiled 21 February 1951 by Alderman A. Ernest Shennan, Chairman of the Mersey Tunnel Joint Committee and leader of Liverpool City Council. An identical medallion at the Birkenhead entrance was unveiled earlier the same day by Alderman Charles McVey, Deputy Chairman of the Joint Committee.
