st. samson was born in south
wales late in the 5th century, at
a time when celtic monasticism
was flourishing.

he began as a disciple of st.
illtyd at llantwit major in the
vale of glamorgan. he then
joined the celtic monastic
community on caldey island
and became abbot.

later he left caldey to work as
a missionary in cornwall and
brittanny, where he eventually
became bishop of dol.

Annotation

This statue was in a niche above the main door of the Abbey church, and was moved here in 1954 to commemorate 25 years of Cistercian life here.
