Description

Tomb built of stone with a plaque, and on this tomb a rather modern (made of kind of fiber glass?) sculpture of the dieing soldier.

The monument is to a young French soldier who was part of the French force which landed nearby at Kilcummen in August 1798. He was the first to lose his life apparently after bleeding to death due to a wound he sustained as a result of his pistol going off while remounting his horse. He was buried secretly close by at Garraí Francach or the French man's Garden. He came from Chauvé which is twinned with the nearby town of Killala.

Ci cit a Garrai Franncach le corps d'un soldat Français qui est mort en août 1798. Il est arrivé à Kilcummin avec le général Humbert et ses armées. Il était le premier soldat de cette expédition a mourir sur le sol irlandais Here in Garrai Franncach lies the body of a French soldier who died in August 1798. He arrived at Kilcummin with General Humbert and his forces. He was the first soldier of that expedition to die on Irish soil. [The Irish text I can't transcribe]
