ヤン・ヨーステンは和蘭人で西暦 1600 年豊後の海で
難破した和蘭船に乗っていた。そのまま日本に住みつき
徳川家康の信任を得、外交や貿易について進言をする役
目についた。その江戸屋敷は和田倉門外の堀端にあった
ので、後に彼の名にちなんで八代洲河岸と称せられ、更
に八重洲になった。ここに彼を偲んで記念像を置く。

English translation:

Jan Joosten van Lodensteyn monument, a work by LPJ 'Bulat', Dutch.
In 1600, Dutchman Jan Joosten drifted ashore to Japan after his ship was wrecked in the Bungo Sea. He lived in Japan under the favor of the Shogun Ieyasu Tokugawa and worked as the consultant of diplomacy and trade.
His house was located in the moat / vicinity of Wadakuramon Gate.
Therefore, the area was named Yaesu Riverside afterwards, and later became Yaesu. We placed this statue in remembrance of him.

Annotation

The bust was quite difficult to find. The Yaesu Shopping Mall (八重洲地下街) is underground on the Yaesu side (east side) of the Tokyo Station. The bust is next to exit 7, giving access from the southern Yaesu hall of the station.
The bust was model for the monument in the Yaesu-dōri, a couple of hundred meter further east.
