Statues - Hither & Thither

 

Description

1. Laivinieks / Boatman (corner of Ausekļa iela:) Boatman working on a boat. On the board the 2nd strophe of the anthem:

   Pilsētā, kurā piedzimst vējš, laivinieks laivai dēli tēš, zārcinieks zārkam vāku tēš pilsētā, kurā piedzimst vējš.

   (translation?)

   On the deck of the boat is a quadrant (?) and an open book with a portrait medallion and the text:

   Latvju pirmajam Jūrskolotājam	Kristiāns Dāls 1839-1904
   Latvia's first naval college teacher	Kristiāns Dāls 1839-1904

   The Swedish Captain Christian Dahl (Latvian: Kristiāns Dāls, 1839-1904) was head of the Naval College in Ainaži

2. Vārna / Crow (corner of Toma iela) crow in a tree, on the branches the 1st strophe:

   Pilsētā, kurā piedzimst vējš, varen varoša vārna zarā sēž, jumtu plēš vējš, bet nenoplēš pilsētā, kurā piedzimst vējš.

   In the city where the wind is always blowing, a very capable crow is sitting on the branch. The wind is tearing off the roofs but is not able to tear them off, In the city where the wind is always blowing,

3. Dzintara latvieši / Amber Latvians (corner of Elkonļu iela), A pub table with three beer cups and a scale with with an inn scene, and the text "Lūk še kā šeitan dzīvo!" 19.gs.s." On the table the 3rd strophe:

   Pilsētā, kurā piedzimst vējš, dzintara latvieši krogos sēž un pa brītiņam traukus plēš pilsētā, kurā piedzimst vējš.

4. Telefonists / Telephonist (lineman) (not photographed, photo at Picasaweb), at the corner of Ūliha iela: man in a telegraph pole. On the telegraph cables is the 4th strophe:

   Pilsētā, kurā piedzimst vējš, telefonisti stabos sēž, labi, ka vējš viņus nenoplēš pilsētā, kurā piedzimst vējš.

   In the city where the wind is always blowing, Telephonists are sitting on the poles (translation?) In the city where the wind is always blowing,

5. Cilvēku mežs / People in the Forest (at the foot of the Monument to the Sailors and Fishermen lost at Sea): A choir with metal stripes in the pavement of the square behind the Monument to the Sailors and Fishermen lost at Sea. In the center a square with musical notation and 6th and last strophe of the anthem:

   Pilsētā, kurā piedzimst vējš, pieplok pie zemes cilvēku mežs, saknes jau vējš neizplēš pilsētā, kurā piedzimst vējš.

   In the city where the wind is always blowing, The wood of people crouch down. The wind is not able to pull out the roots, In the city where the wind is always blowing.
