Annotation
The bust was offered to the city by Gustave Courbet, where he lived since he had to flee from Paris during the Paris Commune of 1871. The present bust is the second design, the Municipality of the time, fearing the confusion between the Phrygian cap of the lady and the Federal Cross of the first version called 'Helvetia', had asked to neutralize "his present before exposure to the fountain." The bust was unveiled on 15 August 1875.
